What I Like About the Boys and Girls Club is . . .
At the Junior Youth of the Year Recognition Dinner and Ceremony at the Western Sussex Boys and Girls Club Feb. 24, six children spoke about "What I like about the Boys and Girls Club is . . .". Marta Navarro, Jacob Turner and Amiah Horsey all said they liked the youth garden club as one of the things they enjoyed best about coming to the Boys and Girls Club. They spoke about which gardening activities they enjoyed. Working in the garden, taking plants home and making Christmas decorations were top on their list.
Maria Navarro was first to speak. Amiah Horsey will represent Seaford along with Lamarion Douglas as the 2016 Junior Youth of the Year from Seaford.
Each of the six youth speakers received a medal from the professional who introduced them, Senator Richardson had tributes for each child and the mayor presented the trophies to the boy and girl who were the 2016 Junior Youth of the Year.
The S&T Garden Club partners with the Western Sussex Boys and Girls Club of Seaford. Annually there are approximately 12 students who participate in monthly projects. They care for raised beds, weeding and the planting of flowers and vegetables. Following are some candid shots of their 2015 activities.

IT'S 2015 SCHOLARSHIP TO EMMA J. O'DONNELL
Carol Kinsley, right, on behalf of The Spade & Trowel Garden Club of Seaford, DE, presented a $1,000 scholarship towards first year college expenses to Emma J. O’Donnell of Rehoboth Beach, Del., a graduating senior of Sussex Technical High School. Miss O’Donnell was selected for her outstanding academic achievement, service to school and community, and commitment to the environment. She plans to attend Washington College in Chestertown, Md., to study Environmental Science.

The 2014 Club members harvested their final crops mid August. Students were permitted to take home some crops and were also treated by the chef to tastes of their labor. The students really enjoyed this experience.
The Spade & Trowel Garden Club 2014 Scholarship Recipients
The Spade & Trowel Garden Club of Seaford was pleased to present two $1,000 scholarships this spring. Recipients were Bethany Brinsfield, now a graduate of North Dorchester High School, who is the daughter of John and Valarie Brinsfield of Vienna, Md. Miss Brinsfield's resume of activities in high school fills five pages and includes participation in 4-H, Key Club, Farm Bureau, church, varsity softball and the senior class play. She ranked first out of 120 students in her class, with a weighted GPA of 4.43. She wants to pursue a major in agricultural engineering.
The second recipient was William L. Davis, son of Matthew and Christine Davis of Bridgeville, Del. Davis maintained a 4.0 GPA while involved in dozens of activities, playing at least one varsity sport per season and wrestling nightly year round for national competitions. He plans to study engineering at Drexel University in Philadelphia.
Under the guidance of Carol Kinsley and Jackie McPeak, children at the Western Sussex Boys and Girls Club who are members of the "Spade & Trowel Kids Garden Club" assemble their entries for the garden's club flower show. The flower show was held at the library on June 10, 2014. Look at the beautiful results of their efforts and the ribbons won.
