Applied Agriculture Program

October 10, 2017, a lovely fall day, the Spade & Trowel garden club held its monthly meeting on the Jack F. Owens Campus, Georgetown, of the Delaware Technical Community College in the newly dedicated agriculture building.

​

The primary use of the building is for the vegetable processing and sales by the students enrolled in the "Applied Agriculture" program.  Department chair, Kyle Serman, and his staff, explained "What's New in Agriculture."  The innovative technology includes hydroponics, the growing of plants without the use of soil, landscape and ornamental horticulture, turfgrass management, production agriculture and agribusiness management.

Following the informative discussion, with a question and answer session, the group toured the grounds which included three new greenhouses and an experimental garden.  The store, which operates out of the new building, is open each Tuesday and Thursday and was open for the club to purchase vegetables, flowers, local honey and much more.

​

Each year the Spade & Trowel garden club offers two $1,000 scholarships to students attending this program and meeting other qualifications as set forth by the club.
